Measles is an infectious disease caused by a virus. This disease spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Anyone can get measles if they haven't been vaccinated or got the measles vaccine. However, this disease is more common in young children.
Measles can be prevented by measles vaccine or MMR vaccine. MMR vaccine protects against three diseases, namely measles, mumps, and also rubella. Immunization protects us from serious illness and also prevents the spread of the disease to others. The government is currently campaigning for MR vaccine to replace the MMR vaccine. This MR vaccine provides protection against the same diseases, namely measles and rubella. For children aged 12 months who have not received the measles vaccine as scheduled, MR vaccine can be given.
The Right Time to Give MR Vaccine
The measles virus is contained in millions of drops of water that come out of the nose and mouth when an infected person coughs or sneezes. This virus can last for several hours. You can easily get infected with this virus, when your hands that have been exposed to the measles virus are brought closer to the nose or mouth.
To overcome measles, you must receive a measles vaccine or MR. Measles and rubella vaccines, also known as MR vaccines, are recommended for all children. Measles and rubella are viral diseases that can become serious if left unchecked.
Symptoms of measles include colds, sneezing, coughing, red eyes and may be sensitive to light, high fever up to 40 degrees Celsius, as well as the appearance of grayish white spots on the inner cheeks. A few days later, a brownish red rash will appear, which usually starts on the head or upper neck, before spreading to other parts of the body. The initial symptoms of measles will develop about 10 days after you or your family are infected with this virus.
If the virus infects the lungs, it can cause pneumonia. In fact, measles in older children can cause inflammation of the brain called encephalitis, where this condition can cause seizures and brain damage.
Measles and Rubella are dangerous, not only do you have to get this vaccine, your baby also has to get the measles vaccine. During the campaign period until September 2018, the Ministry of Health and the Indonesian Pediatrician Association recommends giving the MR vaccine to children aged 9 months to less than 15 years. After the campaign period, this MR vaccine will be included in routine immunizations for children aged 9 months, 18 months, and when children sit in 1st grade elementary school. This vaccine is given by injection into the upper arm (subcutaneous) fat tissue.
Adults and children who only get one shot of measles vaccine or MMR, can get MR vaccine at any age. If the child at the age of 9 months has received the measles vaccine, the MR vaccine can be given at the age of 15 months or according to the routine MR immunization schedule. If the child has received the MMR vaccine, this MR vaccine may also be given.
MR vaccine cannot be given in a number of conditions such as: high fever, severe illness such as having a seizure or loss of consciousness, being hospitalized, suffering from a weakness of the immune system, and a history of allergies to the vaccine.
After receiving the MR vaccine, you need to know some of the side effects, including: pain and redness on the body part that is injected, mild fever, rashes, and muscle aches. However, some side effects and problems after getting this MR vaccine are very rare and very rare. Most people who receive MR vaccines rarely experience serious side effects.
Measles or MR vaccine is very safe and effective. The government together with the World Health Organization (WHO) supports the administration of this MR vaccine to prevent diseases and complications due to measles and rubella.
